This small fishing village was inaccessible to yachts until recent years as the entrance to the river was too shallow. Two new breakwaters and extensive dredging has opened the way to the basin adjacent to the town.
There are no yacht facilities in Alvor but this quiet anchorage makes a pleasant contrast to bustling marinas. The many restaurants on the waterfront and side streets serve fish caught by the local fishing fleet and as much of it is cooked on large barbeques in the street you can inspect the “kitchen” before entering the restaurant. Much of the town is given over to the tourist industry and local handicraft shops can supply all manner of . On the waterfront there is a boatshed that houses the villages old sailing lifeboat thet has been restored to its former glory.
