Sancti Petri has an atmosphere all its own. The approach can be tricky due to the sand banks and rocks and should only be attempted in good weather and on a rising tide. Once inside protection is good although facilities are limited to a few visitors berths although there is plenty of room to lie to your own ground tackle. The local yacht club is a friendly place and the food in the club restaurant is excellent. A walk around the village is intriguing as most of it is deserted. It is reputed that the village was abandoned when the local tuna packing factory closed down and as it provided most of the employment the population dwindled as a result. The upper reaches of the estuary is a bird watchers dream as many species of migratory birds use the lagoon as a refuge.
There are beautiful sandy beaches all around the estuary and it would be easy to find one all to yourself among the sand dunes on the seaward side. In calm weather you can take a trip on the ferry (or your own dinghy) to the Castillo de Sancti Petri that lies on a small island on the approaches to the estuary.
